The City of Escondido is thrilled to announce that Regal Cinemas will remain in the City. Through a joint initiative with the location's property owners and the support of the Downtown Business Association (DBA) and the Greater Escondido Chamber of Commerce, the City worked to encourage the movie theater's continuation within the City.

The initiative included submitting a heartfelt letter of support from the City of Escondido, expressing the community's overwhelming desire to preserve this longstanding asset. Read the full news release here.

Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) Review

On June 7, 2023 the Escondido City Council approved the 2023-2028 Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS). This document outlines data and community feedback about the City's economy and outlines a five-year plan to improve the local economy.

Let's dive into the first section of the CEDS which takes a deep look at the City's Economic Data:

The population of Escondido has aged since the last CEDS. In 2016, roughly one in four residents were 50 or above, but by 2021 almost one in three were. The city has more working-age workers than it did in 2017 (60.3% vs 59.3), but its share of young workers 20- to 40-year-olds dropped from 30.9% to 29.6%. The proportion of seniors grew by 3.3 points to 13.3, while the percentage of minors shrank by 2.3. to 26.6.

The combination of negative population growth and an aging workforce poses a threat to the fiscal sustainability of the City as well as its ability to attract employers and businesses.

POLICE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:

Tacos and Cops

What a successful fun event we had last Saturday! We can't thank Robert and the whole staff at Frida's Taco shop enough. The officers and community had a great time sharing stories, checking out police gear, and enjoying tacos. One of the best parts of the evening was the delicious aguas frescas that everyone enjoyed on the warm evening. We can't wait for our next fun community engagement activity. Our Escondido community always makes these things a blast.
