QriesGreat Job, Public Works!

The City of Escondido's Public Works Department was recently challenged to come up with a solution to keep the Citracado Parkway Extension Project on track, while saving money on project costs. This is a very important project that extends Citracado Parkway from Andreasen Drive to Harmony Grove Village Parkway with a new bridge over Escondido Creek. It also adds an additional lane in the median of Citracado Parkway between Valley Parkway and Avenida del Diablo.

During construction, the power to the existing streetlights had to be redesigned and instead of leaving the street dark at night for several months, Public Works sourced solar powered streetlights from a nearby business that were removing them in favor of permanent lighting. The hard-working crews sourced the lights, reconfigured, transported and re-installed them along Citracado Parkway until new wiring upgrades can be completed. Shout out to our talented Public Works professionals for coming up with an innovative solution to ensure our resident's safety during this incredible upgrade to the City's transportation network!

Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) Review

On June 7, 2023 the Escondido City Council approved the 2023-2028 Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS). This document outlines data and community feedback about the City's economy and outlines a five-year plan to improve the local economy.

Let's dive into the SWOT section of the CEDS:

Central Location: Escondido's geographic location is one feature that will never change and is an enduring source of economic strength. Its position in North-Central San Diego County gives its businesses simultaneous access to two major economic zones: The San Diego-Tijuana Megaregion (of which it is a part), and Southern Orange County. The area is serviced by major arteries, including Interstate 15, State Route 76 and State Route 78. The city is within 100 miles of three major international airports: San Diego International (32 Miles South), John Wayne (68 Miles North), and Ontario (83 Miles Northeast). The City also has access to a massive agricultural complex that totals 219,874 acres and produced $1,752,999,086 in crops in 2021.

Centrality has been essential for prominent local businesses such as Henry Avocado. The Henry family has been operating an avocado farm in San Diego County since 1925, and today has its headquarters and two distribution centers in Escondido. Its nationwide distribution network is centered on the Bravocado and Green Goddess brands and draws on a complex supply chain of produce from California, Mexico, Peru, and Chile. North San Diego County is an ideal location for the manufacture and distribution of a wide variety of products

PAL Basketball Championships

Another great season is in the books. All three championship games were close; two were won by 1 point and one was 3 points. The gym was rocking! Former Laker, Cornell Warner was in the house again and signed autographs. Thank you to all the volunteer coaches and scorekeepers. PAL is happy to report 16 of our kids are now playing high school basketball. PAL is an amazing resource to these children and the Police Department is proud that retired Lieutenant Al Owens always keeps it pushing in the right direction."Way to go kids!"We will see you next season.

FIRE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:

On November 27, the Escondido Police & Fire Communication Center received reports of a vehicle's engine compartment on fire across from Rose School. No injuries were sustained from this fire and the car was quickly extinguished.

The next morning on November 28, Fire crews were dispatched to the 100 block of Falconer for a report of a vehicle on fire. When crews arrived on scene, the vehicle was engulfed and was quickly extinguished by firefighters. The owner of the vehicle was transported to UCSD Burn Center with minor/moderate burns and smoke inhalation. No other structures were damaged. The fire is under investigation.

On November 29, despite the rain, Fire crews were kept busy due to reports of fire at three locations this evening. A dumpster fire at the Transit Center, bushes on fire at Quince and Valley and a trash and brush fire at the 100 block of W Washington Ave. Due the speedy actions of our firefighters, each fire was quickly extinguished before other structures could be damaged. No injuries were sustained. Fire Prevention and Escondido Police Department are investigating the cause of the incidents.

Also, on December 29, Fire Station 1 crews had the pleasure of hosting The After 5 Rotary Club of Escondido. The club generously provided all the firefighters a delicious pulled pork dinner. Firefighters gave a tour of the station and answered questions regarding the fire service and our mission. Members of the club were most interested in how they could help our department or people in the community that were in need. Thank you After 5 Rotary Club for a great evening.

On December 1, Fire crews were dispatched to an encampment fire at La Terraza. The first crew on scene discovered the fire, located across the street from 24-Hour Fitness, on the embankment of the freeway.
