The City of Escondido has taken a comprehensive approach to creating a more sustainable community, with a long-standing commitment to promote eco-friendly practices and support businesses that prioritize environmental stewardship. Through bold steps to conserve water, implement renewable energy sources, and reduce waste through innovative programs and policies, Escondido has cultivated a diverse group of sustainable businesses. In celebration of Earth Month, we are showcasing some exceptional leaders in environmentally friendly, regenerative business across all sectors.

RockeTruck

RockeTruck is creating zero emission electric power freight trucks that can operate with a range up to 400 miles while carrying the standard maximum capacity 80,000-pound load. The trucks will be designed with a PowerBox™, a multi-use building block system that features compact multiple fuel cell and battery configurations. By mixing fuel cells and batteries, RockeTruck is creating an energy conversion device without the polluting excess of diesel-powered vehicles or generators.

EDCO

EDCO is a local, family-owned business in Escondido that is committed to sustainable waste management practices. EDCO specializes in recycling, composting, and waste diversion services for commercial and industrial clients, helping businesses to reduce their environmental impact and operate more sustainably.

Aquacycl

Aquacycl has developed a unique technology that uses naturally occurring bacteria to treat wastewater, making it a highly energy-efficient and cost-effective solution. Recently, Aquacycl partnered with the City of Escondido to conduct trail maintenance for a community volunteer day at Dixon Lake on March 31. The event aimed to encourage environmental stewardship by engaging volunteers in preserving local landscapes and promoting sustainable practices.

Ecolife Conservation

EcoLife Conservation has several, progressive components to its business, from aquaponics to smokeless stoves to community education. Through its diverse sustainability efforts, EcoLife has made a footprint both locally and globally, providing aquaponics-grown produce to Escondido schools and shelters, and thousands of smokeless stoves across Africa and Mexico.

EcoLife Conservation has two aquaponic farms in Escondido.

MFRO Facility

The MFRO (Membrane Filtration Reverse Osmosis) Facility is one of the City of Escondido’s innovative wastewater solutions. Through a specialized membrane filtration process, recycled water is further treated so that it is usable for agriculture irrigation in Escondido, alleviating the amount of wastewater being fed into the oceans and lowering the cost of water for local farmers.

Clean Energy Alliance

The Clean Energy Alliance (CEA), a non-profit agency that was established by the City of Carlsbad, Del Mar, and Solana Beach to provide clean energy options to residents and businesses in the region, is the new energy provider for the City of Escondido as of April 2023, enabling the city to meet its climate action goals by increasing the amount of clean energy they use.

Green Jobs Initiative

Escondido is also working with the San Diego Regional Policy & Innovation Center (SDPIC) to promote green infrastructure and jobs within the City. The program, Equitable Green Infrastructure Funding Accelerator, identifies potential green stormwater infrastructure projects, then puts equity insights into practice by partnering with historically underrepresented communities and submitting a proposal for funding.

"The City of Escondido is working on several equitable, green planning projects which are multi-benefit and prioritize a greener economy and protection of our vital resources like our people, land and water,” said Rachel Lozano Castro, Senior Officer of Programs and Impact at SDPIC. “The San Diego Regional Policy and Innovation Center works with leading cities like Escondido on our critical and collective infrastructure and climate resilience challenges.”

Menon Renewable Products

Menon Renewable Products is the maker of MrFeed®, an animal feed ingredient that is developed through a patented process that converts hydrocarbon based sugars from agriculture based raw material. Proven to be a sustainable and renewable feed for agriculture, poultry, and more, MrFeed® is the first of its kind to get rid of the need for antibiotics in animal feed.

Dr. Suresh Menon is on a quest to halt the global use of antibiotics in animal feeds.

The City of Escondido has taken impressive strides towards creating a sustainable community, with a focus on promoting eco-friendly practices and supporting businesses that prioritize environmental stewardship. From waste management to renewable energy sources, the city has made significant efforts to reduce its environmental impact. Through showcasing exceptional leaders in environmentally friendly, regenerative business across all sectors, such as RockeTruck, EDCO, Aquacycl, EcoLife Conservation, MFRO Facility, Clean Energy Alliance, Green Jobs Initiative, and Menon Renewable Products, the City is paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
